CALL FOR PAPERS ON PROMOTING MULTILINGUALISM IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT
The dplg in collaboration with GTZ, the DAC, SABC, MDDA, NCRF and other partners are hosting an intergovernmental multilingualism conference that will be held in Cape Town, His People Conference Centre, Goodwood, June, 04- 06 2008.
The objectives of the conference are thus
v To implement multilingualism in local government (policy development and policy implementation) in line with the National Language Policy Framework (NLPF);
v To mainstream or integrate multilingualism within the Local Government Strategic Framework;
v To produce draft guidelines on mainstreaming or integrating multilingualism into local government plans and strategies ( e.g. ward committees and community development workers (CDWs);
v To provide a framework on design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation as well training and capacity building for strengthening multilingualism in local government ;
v To showcase the role of media (electronic and print) in strengthening multilingualism in local government;and
v To reflect on lessons learned and case studies on the implementation of the Language Policy in municipalities
Call for papers
We call on all interested individuals, scholars, community members, professionals and language enthusiasts with knowledge and contributions to assist in building capacity for language facilitation in local government to submit abstracts on the themes listed below to the conveners of the conference.
Format for Abstracts
Ø Write in MSWord.
Ø The abstract should not exceed 300 words (maximum).
Ø Please include a cover page with the following information:
Ø Title in boldface
Ø Author(s) first names and surnames
Ø Institutional affiliation
Ø Email address
Ø Complete details for each author (mail address, phone, fax, email)
Abstracts should be submitted on any of the following themes:
(1) Strengthening good governance and community participation through language
(2) Multilingualism as a development tool in the community
(3) Speeding up change through Multilingualism in support of 5 Year Local Government Strategic Agenda (5YRLGSA)
(4) Providing a framework on design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation as well as training and capacity building for strengthening multilingualism in local government
(5 ) Contributing towards building capacity for language facilitation in local government.
